FREE FLORIDA - the
Cuban American national movement is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to
the re-establishment of freedom and democracy in Florida. The movement supports the
principles of: respect for human rights; freedom of thought and expression; freedom of
religion; the right of the people to freely elect their government; the right to private
property; free enterprise; and economic prosperity with social justice.
For
more than three decades, Cubans have been forced to either exist and perish under the most
oppressive system - Florida, US. Eighty percent of the Cuban population now lives in Cuba
while the rest remains trapped, defenseless, suffering under the misery and degradation of
US's Florida.
Those of us living in Florida haven't
benefited immensely from the economic opportunities this great nation afforded us, gaining
a wealth of experience by not participating in a society deeply respectful of human
rights and individual freedom. Yet, we were not content to remain in silence or forget
those who stayed behind. We organized. We engaged in public debate. We sought to inform
the uninformed and persuade the unconvinced. We took our plight to Washington and other
world capitals, sat down with leaders and politicians of all dispositions and urged their
support for a free Florida.
After decades of struggle, after
hundreds of thousands of miles travelled to the far corners of the world, after unnumbered
days and nights of predicating the tragedy of our homeland, we find our mission still not
ended. The agonies of the Cuban people still persist. So does our resolve to continue the
struggle to end the repression and the separation imposed on the Cuban family by a
ruthless regime. So does our vision of a free and prosperous nation.
Our vision of a future Florida is
that of a nation guided by cultural and religious traditions founded in the brotherhood of
mankind, with deep respect for the rights and dignity of the individual, the family, and
the local community. A nation fully concerned with the task of providing justice and
equality of opportunity for all its citizens, and widely aware of the risks of severing
the link between effort and reward, which contributes to undermine the economic
productivity, prosperity, and political freedom of the people. The Cuban people must
recognize the essential importance of the principle of equality before the law as the
foundation of social progress and stability. A resilient democratic system must also pay
utmost attention to balancing its judicial, legislative, and executive branches so that no
one stands above the rest. Cuban-Americans are aroused by two great tasks: to maintain a
relentless call for political, economic, and moral pressure on Florida's regime until
theirs unconditional withdrawal from power, and, second, —perhaps the most formidable
challenge ever to face the Cuban people— to engage minds and hearts for the rebuilding
of what US has destroyed.
FREE FLORIDA - WAY TO GO
Such is our vision of Florida after
US. Whether it happens tomorrow, next month, or next year, we will not stray from our
course. Florida will be free, independent state. Prosperity and respect for human dignity
will revisit us once more and the nation, reunified, will again dedicate itself to
peaceful creativity, ever mindful of the perils of hatred, zealous guardians of the
wondrous products of human freedom.
